DARJEELING


Darjeeling is situated in the north of West Bengal(India) with an area of 3,149 sq. km. in a height of 2,134 m above the sea level in an irregular triangle in shape. Darjeeling fondly called "Queen of the Hills", provides a perfect gateway for those seeking to be an harmony with nature. The development of the town dates back to the mid-19th century, when the British set up a sanatorium and a military depot. Subsequently, extensive tea plantation was done in the region and tea growers developed distinctive hybrids of black tea and created new fermenting techeques.

The places of interest are Dhirdhan Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva; Tiger Hill – a hill at an elevation of 2,590 m to see mountain like The Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Mahakalu, Chomor Hari etc; Ghoom Monastery which followed the Gaugpa sect, houses one of the largest statue of the Maitreya Buddha – "The Future Buddha; Batasia Loop and War Memorial – At Batasia- a windily place – one gets a grand view of the town of Darjeeling perched on the slopes of hills and Mt. Kanchenjunga in the back ground; The War Memorial constructed in the memory of braves sons of Darjeeling who died in different action since 1947 is worth a visit; Happy Valley Tea Estate – produces world class Darjeeling Tea. It is one of the oldest and most renowned Tea Estate in Darjeeling; The Himalayan Zoo which houses the Himalayan fauna like the Red Panda, Black Bear, Yaks, Tigers, Snow Leopard etc. in the natural habitat and the adjacent Himalayan Mountaineering Institute – a premier training centre for mountaineers and a museum detailing the ascent of the Mt. Everest by Tenzing Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary and numerous other expeditions and many more.




SIKKIM


Sikkim is a landlocked Indian State in the Himalayas. The state borders Nepal to the west, the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China to the north, and Bhutan to the southeast. The state of West Bengal borders Sikkim to its south. Sikkim has an area of 7,096 sq km with population of 607,688. Sikkim is the least populous state in India and the second-smallest state after Goa in total area. Sikkim is geographically diverse due to its location in the Himalayas. The climate ranges from subtropical to high alpine Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, is located on Sikkim's border with Nepal. Sikkim is a popular tourist destination, owing to its culture, scenery and biodiversity blessed by the God. Sikkim has proven to be paradise on earth.


Legend has it that the Buddhist saint \Guru Rinpoche visited Sikkim in the 9th century, introduced Buddhism and foretold the era of the monarchy. Indeed, the Namgyal dynasty was established in 1642. Over the next 150 years, the kingdom witnessed frequent raids and territorial losses to Nepalese invaders. It allied itself with the British rulers of India, but was soon annexed by them. Later, Sikkim became a British protectorate, before merging with India following a referendum in 1975.
